Rotorua North Island Teams Classic 2nd & 3rd February 2001 by Macgor / Page 4
Run Off for third and fourth
All Stars versus Northern Select
Never happened because the Select team weren't able to field enough cars so the Auckland Allstars were awarded
third place in the competition by default .
Final
Waikato Wanderers versus Rotorua Rebels
92r Shane Penn was Rebel reserve and 41h Trevor Mason sat this one out again for the Wanderers .
94r Darcy Hunter made a clean break into the lead from pole . 71h Tony Wootton and 18h Bryce Steiner
spent their time interfering with any Rebels that came their way while 58h Shaun Wade put in as many clean laps as
possible to stay with the leaders pace . Wootton's first major score came when he took 94r Darcy Hunter to the
wall exiting turn four . Hunter got going again but  now 95r Rodney Wood was running up front for the Rebels .
Back in the field there was battle after battle happening and at one stage Wootton gad 96r Murray Hobbs balancing
on two wheels . Hobbs recovered to soon after slam 58h Shaun Wade into the main straight wall . Wade
recovered quickly and resumed his mission of speed .
Wood still led but an anxious moment at the hands of Bryce Steiner nearly put him out .
8h Dave Roigard had been doing his bit for the Wanderers cause too and an important move on his part was trapping
Darcy Hunter and holding him for over a lap .
Laps were winding down and throughout the race the Rebels had led despite the Waikato efforts , the Wanderers
were going to have to get something sorted soon .
That something happened as Rodney Wood entered the last turn leading up to the white flag . Dave Roigard waited
in the turn leaving a lane to his left as bait for Wood . Wood bit and went for the inside pass only to find himself
being launched towards the wall over Roigard's left front as Roigard turned left on him . Wootton moved in for the
quick death slam dunk and Wood's race was run . Darcy Hunter was the first car to the white flag although a
lap down from the earlier Roigard incident . Mistakenly the flag was unfurled on him and the locals were
rapt . The clue though was the flag mans rewaving vigorously of the white flag when 58h Shaun Wade went
by .Hunter got back to the line expecting the chequered , the crowd and commentators were dumbfounded when
it never happened . Wade arrived soon after having run a cautious final lap to claim the win for the Waikato Wanderers .
Support Classes
Friday Night
Minisprints 22 cars run in two uneven groups of ten and twelve to qualify 20 cars for the saturday night finals .
Six boring races of pointless nothing but insult to my intelligence .
Std Stocks 13 cars only but not too bad to watch
Ministocks 21 cars and fairley tame
Streetstocks 6 cars that did their best to spike the show .
Saturday Night
A-grade Stocks 17 cars with good hard racing . Top cars and top action
Std Stocks 16 cars and the tempo upped a bit
Ministocks 22 cars and some good niggling races .
Minisprints 20 car field for their three finals heats , heat one marred by stoppages and time wasted getting them
back into the right order for restarts . Heat two ran clean and I was long gone before they ran their final heat .
I could say more about this unevenly matched class but I shall control myself .
Commentating
Commentating appears to have been stepped up a notch or two at Rotorua this season with the sound system
working much better and more use made of the roving microphone . A good job done I thought although it was
annoying hearing drivers names announced wrongly . Trevor Manson does not race for Huntly but there is a Trevor Mason . Likewise for Rotorua there is no Shaun Penn the locally contracted drivers name is Shane Penn .
The Venue
A lot of effort has gone into tidying up the speedway and it shows , from the new access way around the track to
the planted gardens . Well done!
Value for money?
Friday night was definitely stretching the point on dollar value but by contrast Saturday night night was worth it .
