While most 8 year olds are starting to get excited knowing the new school year is only a few days away, Waverly Park student Cormac Buchanan is more interested in claiming his first ever Southland Peewee Solo Title this Saturday night at the Russell Cunningham Properties Oreti Park Speedway.

Buchanan has been the man to watch in the Peewee class in what is only his first full season, he started in January last year and took to speedway like a duck to water, saying "he loves drifting his bike out, and loves to go as fast as he can with no brakes", the humble youngster already has his plans mapped out, he wants to represent New Zealand at the FIM World Speedway Grand Prix against his favorite rider Nicki Pedersen of Denmark, Buchanan says " i watch him on TV and i want to be as good as him when I'm older", he also has ambitions of racing Moto GP.

Buchanan also looks up to Hayden Sims for motivation, Sims recently finished 2nd at the National Championships this year and it has shown Buchanan what can be achieved, he also learns a lot from his father Stacey, who has built him his own bike and set him up a track at home to practice on, and pass on a few tips.

Buchanan knows that he will be up against some very tough opposition if he is to claim the Southland title with ten entries in total, Savannah Caulfield, Braxton Casey, Mason Coulthard and Lachlan McIntyre have all pushed Buchanan hard this year and are all capable of an upset on the night. Buchanan has full respect for his rivals but is fully focused on the job at hand saying " I'm so excited to race in the Peewee Champs, we might be smaller but we ride as hard as the big guys, everyone should come and watch".

The club also hosts the Auckland Rhinos who will take on the Southland Outlaws in the National Solo League, both teams have come off big losses to the in form Canterbury Comets and need to win this teams event to avoid the wooden spoon and stay in the hunt for the title.

The Southland Outlaws will be strong with newly crowned New Zealand Champion James Sargent leading the team along side Hayden Sims, Grant Tregoning, Jack McRae and John Tuffley replacing an injured Paul Hayes while Auckland will feature current National Under 21 Champion Bradley Wilson-Dean, Dylan Hancock, Brady Mudgeway, Jake Turner and Ryan Terry-Daley.

Full fields of support classes will also be racing, including sidecars, solo support, classic solos and junior solos, racing starts at 4pm Saturday night.
