Mountney Makes His Mark

By Daryl Shuttleworth

Gore teenager Dylan Mountney is turning heads, usually the heads that are turning are those of his competitors as he passes them in his production saloon.

The sixteen year old has only been competing at The Rock Riverside Speedway for less than two years, and has accomplished more than some drivers will in a lifetime.

Mountney started off in the Youth Saloon grade in a Honda Civic and had mixed results, he picked up a few placings here and there, the odd win, a fairly good effort considering it was all new to him, but he was eager to mix it with the more experienced drivers and faster cars in the Production Saloon grade this season.

Mountney purchased a Honda Prelude and joined the grade with almost instant success, winning the best pairs along with the Christmas Cup for Productions, but it was his efforts winning the Southland Championship in his first season racing in this class that turned heads, and is a career highlight to date.

If that wasnt enough the St Peters College student decided to put his speedway plans for next season in place, meaning leaving school in pursuit of making enough money to fund his passion, Mountney secured a job as a tyre technician at The Tyre General Gore.

Mountney has also purchased next seasons race car and will move into the Stockcar class which has seen a huge resurgence this season and should see over a dozen cars entered next season. Mountney says " Im looking forward to getting the Stockcar on track next season, I'm fully committed to my racing, hopefully I get some local businesses keen to back me now, so that I can take them with me as I progress".

Mountney will be competing in his Production Saloon this Saturday night but will be keeping a close eye on his future competition as the Stockcars battle it out for the Southland Championship, a title that should be closely contested after solid results from Steve Clements, Andrew Watson and Daniel Harper at the recent South Island title.

It will also be a big night for the local Streetstock drivers with a big field expected to contest the Kergozou Memorial Trophy, while visiting Mini Stocks will showcase some more upcoming speedway talent, along with Modified Sprints, Youth Saloons, Production Saloons and Saloons, racing starts at The Rock Riverside Speedway at 5pm.
