A large field of Modified Sprints are set to do battle this Saturday afternoon as The Rock FM Riverside Speedway hosts the Southland Championship.
Last seasons champion Peter Dickson, who won the title in his debut year has since moved on with his Speedway career, meaning there will be no chance of a back to back title winner this Saturday.

Heading into the event you would have to be backing Invercargill driver Jayden Fraser to take the title, the teenager has come into his own this season and has grabbed race wins at most meetings but does get a little erratic from time to time, something he will need to overcome to claim the title.

Chris Sharp is another driver who has started to claim race wins on a regular basis late in the season, Sharp has spent considerable time in the last twelve months or so rebuilding his car, and its finally starting to pay off with solid results, Sharp should be a strong contender for the title.

Daryl Scott and Michael Jackson are the two most consistant drivers in the field, and it will take consistency to win the title, if Scott gets a start on the front row of the grid he has shown that hes a very tough driver to chase down.
Raymond Phillips took a brilliant win last meeting at Riverside which will give him a huge shot of confidence that he can win the Southland Championship.
Other drivers who are entered and should definitely not be discounted are Dean Miller, Tony Jones and Kev Fulton, all three are fast, and capable of doing the job, making this championship one of the most fiercely contested championships of the season.

The club also welcomes back the fire breathing Saloons who just last weekend battled in out at Riverside for the New Zealand Grand Prix, they return this Saturday to contest the Southern Saloon Slam presented by Southland Tyre Centre.
The event in its first year is sponsored by Cleanways 2003 Ltd and Graham Williamson X Factor Cars, and brings saloon drivers from across the South Island together over three meetings at Cromwell, Dunedin and Invercargill, to crown the Southern Saloon Slam Champion, and a share of over $10,000.00 in prize money.

Going into the Grand Final this Saturday Dave McCallion of Cromwell holds a slender lead of just 45 points after a clean sweep of wins in Dunedin, but with each heat worth 100 points McCallion will need to be on his game to claim the title.

Steve Robertson of Cromwell in his Mustang currently sits in second place, and seems to take to the Riverside track well.
Robertson claimed a heat victory at the NZGP last weekend and looked fast all meeting, but like McCallion he does not hold much of an advantage over his nearest rivals with Ivan Murdoch of Cromwell just 20 points back in third and Terry McBride a further five points back in fourth.

Locals will be backing brothers Lloyd and Craig Phillips both are well down on overall points with Lloyd seventh and Craig just managing to sneak into the top ten overall.
Other drivers to feature in the top ten who will be in action this Saturday are Graham Williamson and Russell Erskine both of Cromwell and Aaron Andrews of Dunedin.

Support classes for this Saturdays meeting are Stockcars, Streetstocks, Youth Saloons and Production Saloons, racing gets underway at The Rock FM Riverside Speedway at 3pm.
